In this installment of the Chicago Bulls 2022 NBA Draft Profile, we look at Jalen Duren. The 18-year-old played his freshman year at Memphis and impressed scouts with his ability to block shots and finish at the rim. As noted in previous draft profiles, a big man would be the Bulls’ most likely selection if they are to keep the No. 18 overall draft pick.
Duren’s offense lives in the paint. He will rarely step outside of the lane for a jump shot or a long-range attempt. In fact, Duren only took one three-point shot, which he missed, during the 2021-22 season. If he were to become the Bulls’ selection, it wouldn’t be because of his ability to stretch the floor. Rather, the team would value his athleticism and defensive presence in the paint, which they desperately need.
Last season at Memphis, Duren took a total of 236 shots. 184 of them came from inside the paint. Entering the NBA, he has the ability to develop a softer touch at the rim to make him more versatile. Duren is also an above-average passer. Though he only averaged 1.3 APG, most of those assists came from teammates cutting to the rim on post-ups or face-ups.
In his lone season at Memphis, Duren averaged 12 PPG, 1.3 APG, and 2.1 BPG and shot 60% from the field. At one time, draft analysts considered him a high-lottery pick, but his stock has dropped off a bit. If the Chicago Bulls decide to keep the pick, Jalen Duren could potentially fill a dire need right away.
