Chicago Bulls 2022 NBA Draft Profile: E.J. Liddell

Ohio State’s leader in points, rebounds and blocks last season has “star in his role” written all over him.

For as much paint as they’ve slapped across the roster over the course of the past 15 months, Chicago Bulls’ executive vice president Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley have more work to do.

Arming the franchise with its first winning team since 2016 is praiseworthy—especially considering one of their prized acquisitions missed more games than he played last season. But to keep the ball rolling, Karnisovas and Eversley need to find more size, shooting, and defense.

With the 18th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft in their pocket, should Ohio State’s E.J. Liddell be on their radar?

Who is E.J. Liddell?

Well, according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, Liddell will be a Bull six days from now. And if so, it’s safe to assume he’ll be a mainstay in Billy Donovan’s rotation. Just like another former All-Big Ten First-Team selection

Not only would Liddell be a 6-foot-7, 240-pound reinforcement for the frontline, but he would also provide rebounding, defensive versatility, and spot-up shooting. He averaged 19.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocked shots per game for the Buckeyes last season. All of those figures were team-best marks.

The 21-year-old shot 49% from the field and, after converting just 30.1% of his threes through his freshman and sophomore seasons, knocked down 37.4% of attempts from downtown as a junior.

To be fair, Liddell will need his sturdy frame, 35.5-inch vertical, and 6-foot-11 wingspan to offset the height and quickness he’d give up in certain matchups. (He’s thought to be more of the ilk of P.J. Tucker, Paul Milsap, P.J. Washington, and Grant Williams. Though as Ricky O’Donnell of SB Nation said on the Cash Considerations: A Chicago Bulls Pod recently, ”E.J. Liddell is sneaky fucking explosive as a leaper.”)

But like other prospects who’ve been covered in this space — Mark Williams, Jalen Duren, Tari Eason, and Kessler Walker — E.J. Liddell doesn’t have to be perfect to be a perfect fit for the Bulls.
