Ahead of the Chicago Cubs’ first pitch against the Pirates on Monday, they optioned right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson. Correspondingly, the cubs recalled outfielder Nelson Velazquez.

The Adrian Sampson/Chicago Cubs Rollercoaster Continues

When the Cubs selected the contract of Adrian Sampson last week, the righty had only appeared in one game in 2022. Upon his return, Sampson brought an 0.00 ERA with him to Chicago.

On Sunday, he pitched 4.2 innings and gave up one hit. But his ERA remained at 0.00 and despite the 6-0 loss, Sampson performed. He came into the game in relief of Kyle Hendricks, who earned all six of the Braves’ runs, and threw a shutout for the remainder of the game.

Following a stellar performance, albeit with an enormous deficit and no run-support, the Chicago Cubs optioned Adrian Sampson to Iowa where his literal up-and-down season continues. The Cubs are now at the 13-pitcher limit, meeting the deadline set in place.

Nelson Velazquez

The Cubs recalled outfielder, Nelson Velazquez, to the active roster. In two games in 2022, Velazquez had seven plate appearances. He managed two hits in those at-bats.

So far, Nelson Velazquez has spent most of 2022 between Triple-A in Iowa and Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies. He played in 56 games combined and has 203 at-bats. Velazquez managed 49 hits with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs.

Slashing .241/.332/.527, Velazquez looks to build off the .859 OPS he built in the minors.

With the addition of Nelson Velazquez, the Chicago Cubs now have seven rookies on the active roster. Sending Adrian Sampson down to Triple-A Iowa keeps them in compliance with MLB and the Cubs begin a seven-game road trip Monday night against Pittsburgh.
