Chicago Cubs manager, David Ross, announced that rookie right fielder, Seiya Suzuki, will head to Arizona on Monday to continue rehab. Ross talked about the benefits of Suzuki continuing his rehab in Mesa instead of traveling with the team to recover from his injured finger.

Seiya Suzuki’s Hot Streak and Production Since

Suzuki started off the season on a hot streak. Posting a slash line of .279/.405/.529 with four home runs and 14 RBIs, he took April’s Rookie of the Month honors easily.

He experienced a bit of a cold spell in May but before he landed on the injured list, Seiya Suzuki was hitting .245 with a .344 OBP and a .775 OPS. It’s not bad production for a rookie still adjusting after playing his entire career in Japan prior to this season.

When Will He Return To The Chicago Cubs?

It’s unclear exactly when Suzuki could return from the IL, especially after having a setback last week when he experienced swelling from his finger. But heading to Arizona to get more work in is a good sign that the outfielder could be close to returning to the field.

Suzuki has not played in a major league game since May 26th when he sprained his finger sliding into second base against the Cincinnati Reds.

It’s assumed that Suzuki will make a rehab stint before his return to the major league club, but as far as when that might be is up to Suzuki’s progress and communication with the staff.

“We’re going to lean on Seiya to let us know how he’s feeling on a daily basis and progressing in the right way.”

Ross continued to say that Suzuki told him his finger is starting to feel a lot better. The Chicago Cubs head to Pittsburgh on Monday, where they kick off a four-game road series against the Pirates.
