On the way out to DC, I made a stop in the Steel City: Pittsburgh, PA. While I was there, my fiancé and I took the famous Duquesne Incline to get a good view of the city. While up there, we stopped at one of the establishments for a few drinks to enjoy along with the sights. Looking at the menu, Iron City Beer’s quote spoke out, “The Beer Drinker’s Beer”. That is a bold claim for any beer.
To no surprise, it came served in a bottle and had more of a domestic look to it. It’s definitely not a craft beer, but it still had a local vibe. Simple but strong and proud — much like all the steel elements around the city.
The liquid was a pale straw color with a thin white head that dissipated when poured. This lager checks in at 4.7% ABV. The first sip consisted of a mix of sweet corn and malts. The flavors danced a little and went down smooth with some carbonation, and the aftertaste was a fairly dry finish. Iron City’s Premium Lager is smooth enough to be a summer beer but has the right malts to make it a solid selection for winter as well.
For a cheaper domestic lager, this fits the script. It’s similar to Yuengling in some ways but carries a more watery and different flavoring. This one is nothing flashy, but it’s simple and gets the job done. Pittsburgh steel workers have been the ones pushing its legacy along. When in Pittsburgh, give it a try to taste the pride of the city.
