Heartbreaking news surfaced on Thursday regarding one of the Chicago Cubs’ young relief pitchers. Ethan Roberts, who made the team out of Spring Training and is the No. 28 ranked prospect in the Cubs’ system, will require Tommy John Surgery, ending his 2022 campaign.

After making the Opening Day roster, Roberts appeared in nine games for the Cubs before dealing with injury. The 24-year-old pitched 7.2 innings with 8.22 ERA, nine strikeouts, and one hold. After a rough start to the season, Roberts hit the 10-day IL on May 2, retroactive to April 30.

To further complicate Roberts’ season, the right-hander was transferred to the 60-day IL ahead of the Memorial Day doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers. As soon as that occurred, fans feared Roberts’ injury was worse than expected. He was sent on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa on June 19, but just four days later his season has come to an end.

This is certainly a tough go for Roberts. He is a promising young bullpen arm with the potential to make a huge impact in the majors. However, after his tumultuous 2022 campaign, fans will likely have to wait until the second half of 2023 to see him make a return with the Cubs.
