The Chicago White Sox suffered a trio of injuries on Wednesday, and Danny Mendick’s was the scariest of the bunch. Now diagnosed with a torn ACL in his right knee, Mendick will head to the 10-day injured list and his season is presumably over. In his place, the White Sox have selected the contract of infielder Lenyn Sosa from Double-A Birmingham.
The club also placed Adam Engel on the IL with a strained right hamstring and promoted Gavin Sheets from Triple-A Charlotte. Additionally, the White Sox transferred Eloy Jimenez to the 60-day IL.
What Will Lenyn Sosa Bring to the White Sox?
Sosa is the No. 22 prospect in the Chicago White Sox’s system, according to MLB.com. The 22-year-old has simply been tearing it up for the Birmingham Barons this season. Across 62 games, Sosa owns a slash line of .331/.384/.549 with 14 home runs and 48 RBIs, good for a 140 wRC+.
Sosa can get it done with the glove as well. While shortstop is his primary position, Sosa has also spent time at second and third base this season. He has committed just four errors on 216 defensive chances across 498 innings during the 2022 campaign.
While Danny Mendick’s diagnosis is extremely unfortunate, this situation represents an opportunity for Sosa to show what he can bring to the table. His performance at the pitcher-friendly Double-A level is undoubtedly impressive, but can it translate over to the MLB level?
