Charles Barkley Says The Bulls Should Go After Rudy Gobert

Charles Barkley is one of the NBA’s most well-known personalities and critics. The Chicago Bulls are one of the teams Barkley is rather critical about, and he has a big trade target in mind that he thinks the team should pursue — Rudy Gobert.

During a recent segment on ESPN 1000, Barkley said the Bulls are “pretty damn good right now.” After making the jump into the playoff picture last season, Chicago gained a lot of credibility around the league. And doing so while having to navigate a plethora of health issues surely elevates their reputation further.

But Sir Charles said the Bulls would be even better if they had Rudy Gobert. “I’m a Gobert guy.”

Barkley isn’t wrong. Gobert is one of the best defensive centers in the NBA. Last season, he posted a defensive rating of 103.2, which was a league-best figure. Acquiring Gobert would immediately help the Bulls would address their biggest need: a defensive big man.

The Bulls finished 22nd in defensive rating last year due to a few factors. At the beginning of the season, Chicago’s defense ranked as high as eighth-best powered a backcourt of Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso providing a tight perimeter. But after injuries piled up and a few weeks of film to dissect, opponents found attacking the interior was the Bulls’ weak spot. From that point on, opposing teams utilized this strategy and it became the Bulls’ kryptonite.

What Would It Take To Acquire Rudy Gobert?

Now that the NBA Draft has passed and Rudy Gobert is still with the Jazz, it is possible that his trade value has decreased. If Gobert is serious about wanting out of Utah, he could start missing practices, as other frustrated star players have done in the past.

Since the Chicago Bulls are reluctant to move Patrick Williams, the best trade package they can put together for Gobert would consist of Nikola Vucevic, Coby White, and Portland’s 2023 first-round pick. However, the Jazz will likely want a more substantial return, and other teams have more picks to offer for the three-time All-Star.

If Utah’s asking price for Gobert is too high, the Bulls could look to target Mitchell Robinson in free agency.
