The Chicago Blackhawks have a new head coach. The team will hire Luke Richardson for the position, according to multiple reports.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff first reported the news. Chicago reportedly picked Richardson over Vancouver Canucks’ associate head coach Brad Shaw and Blackhawks’ interim coach Derek King. Richardson, 53, will take over the Blackhawks after King finished the 2021-22 season with the interim tag.

Luke Richardson spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach of the Montreal Canadiens (2018-22) and New York Islanders (2017-18). In his third season with Montreal, he replaced Dominique Ducharme in the 2021 playoffs when Ducharme temporarily left the team for health reasons. Richardson took over as head coach for Game 3 of the semifinals, and the Canadiens defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Richardson previously served as an assistant coach for the Ottawa Senators (2008-12) before becoming the Senators’ AHL head coach (2012-16).

Selected in the first round of the 1987 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, he scored 201 points (35 goals, 166 assists) in 1,417 regular-season games. He added eight assists in 69 playoff games. Richardson played for Toronto (1987-91), Edmonton (91-97), Philadelphia (97-02), Columbus (02-06), Tampa Bay (06-07) and Ottawa (07-09).

Luke Richardson will now have his choice to pick his coaching staff, which could include King. The Chicago Blackhawks parted ways with assistant coaches Rob Cookson and Marc Crawford in May.
