On Saturday night, the Wolves can capture the Calder Cup with a victory in Game 5 of the Calder Cup Final in Springfield, MA against the Thunderbirds.

The Chicago Wolves entered the Calder Cup Final on a mission. After two seasons without a Calder Cup champion due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saturday night marks the first chance for the trophy to be awarded since 2019.

In 2019, the Chicago Wolves, then affiliated with the Vegas Golden Knights, lost in the Calder Cup Final to the Charlotte Checkers. Three years later, the Carolina Hurricanes organization, now the Wolves, has a chance to repeat as Calder Cup champs for the first time since the Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals) in 2009 and 2010.

Entering Saturday night, the Wolves hold a 3-1 lead in the Calder Cup Final. Although the Springfield Thunderbirds took the first game of the series, the Wolves have rattled off three consecutive victories. In their last two games, the Wolves scored four goals in both games.

King Pyotr

Over six starts in these playoffs, goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov has been fabulous for the Wolves. After returning from Carolina upon their playoff exit, the 2019 second-round pick has split time with Alex Lyon during this run. Over his six starts, Kochetkov is 5-1 with a 1.65 GAA, .950 save percentage, and two shutouts. To say he has been incredible would be quite the understatement. Ideally, Kochetkov will get the start in the potential clinching game for Chicago.

Don’t sleep on Alex Lyon though. Worth noting, Lyon is 8-3 in these playoffs. In addition, he possesses a 2.21 GAA, .916 save percentage, and one shutout over 11 appearances. The Wolves have received elite goaltending to this point.

Title Number 5?

With a victory in Game 5, the Wolves would capture their fifth championship in franchise history. After two Turner Cups (IHL) in 1998 and 2000, the Wolves captured Calder Cups in 2002 and 2008. This would be the third Calder Cup title in the team’s illustrious history.

For the Hurricanes franchise, a title for Chicago means another year of great development. After securing the last Calder Cup in 2019, the organization can sport back-to-back titles while their NHL roster drips with talent.

How to Watch

Saturday night’s game can be found on AHL TV. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT from Springfield, MA.

What to Know

With the title on the line, Chicago can clean sweep the three games in Springfield with a win in Game 5. However, in the event the series persists (knock on wood), Chicago and Springfield would return to Allstate Arena on Tuesday night for Game 6. That said, the Wolves would likely enjoy closing out the series on Saturday night in Game 5.
