The Chicago Blackhawks traded Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for three draft picks Thursday ahead of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Chicago received first- (No. 7) and second-round picks (No. 39) for this year’s draft and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

The 24-year-old forward had 78 points in 82 games this season and led Chicago in goals with 41 to tie his NHL career season-high, previously set in 2018-19. A second-round pick (No. 39) in the 2016 NHL Draft, DeBrincat has 307 points (160 goals, 147 assists) in 368 games for the Blackhawks and six points (two goals, four assists) in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Alex DeBrincat is entering the final season of a three-year, $19.2 million contract ($6.4 million annual average value) and could become a restricted free agent after next season. His annual salary could be as high as $9 million on his next contract.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision to trade a player of Alex’s caliber,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. “We feel as if this move sets the Blackhawks up for future success by giving us additional flexibility and future talent. Securing this early of a first-round pick for tonight and an additional second-round selection tomorrow allows us to fortify our prospect base with high-end players who we expect to be difference makers in the coming years.”

The 2022 NHL Draft is Thursday and Friday at Bell Centre in Montreal. The Blackhawks now hold 10 draft picks, including seven in the top 100.

Second round: Nos. 38, 39, 57

Third round: Nos. 81, 90, 94

Sixth round: Nos. 167, 173
