Johnny Cueto allowed five hits. That’s it. He also struck out five Detroit Tigers in eight shutout innings on Saturday afternoon. The veteran righty was aided by the Chicago White Sox offense scoring early and often. The Sox led 6-0 after the first two frames, which was more than enough for Cueto.
Another Successful Cueto Day
Johnny Cueto once again pitched to what we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him. He produced his eighth quality start out of 10. Cueto kept the Tigers’ bats quiet all afternoon as he improved to 3-4 and lowered his ERA to 2.91. He has easily been the most important offseason addition to the 2022 White Sox.
Jose Ruiz pitched the ninth inning. He fanned one and allowed just one hit.
Scoring Early And Often
The South Siders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Lefty slugger Gavin Sheets deposited a home run with two on and two out to give the Sox their first trio of runs.
The offense added three more runs in the second inning, all of which also came with two outs. Tim Anderson stroked a base hit to start the rally. Andrew Vaughn got hit by a pitch and then Luis Robert recorded his 46th RBI on a single to left that plated Anderson. Jose Abreu followed with a double to right over the head of Willi Castro to bring in two more.
The Sox piled on two more runs in the sixth when they strung together three hits and took advantage of a wild pitch. Seby Zavala doubled and Leury Garcia singled to bring him home. Anderson singled to move Garcia to third, which set up the Sox’s final run on Will Vest’s wild pitch.
Notes
Jose Abreu extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
Eloy Jimenez was not in the lineup due to soreness.
