According to reports from NHL Insider Chris Johnston, the Chicago Blackhawks have placed both Brett Connolly and Henrik Borgstrom on unconditional waivers.

As indicated, the purpose is for buyout of both players. General manager Kyle Davidson is thrashing this roster down to the bare bones, keeping only the guys he wants around. Connolly and Borgstrom were set to make $3.5 million and $1.0 million, respectively, in 2022-23.

Connolly spent majority of the season in the AHL during 2021-22. Although he suited up nine times for the Blackhawks, he only managed to record one assist. However, in 37 games with the Rockford IceHogs the veteran recorded 35 points (17 goals, 18 assists) last season.

As for Borgstrom, the 24-year-old center suited up in 52 games for the Blackhawks last season. However, despite being a former first-round pick, Borgstrom never lived up to the hype he once carried as a collegiate player at Denver. Instead, Borgstrom middled and only recorded seven points (four goals, three assists) in 2021-22.

What’s the Damage?

Ironically, both players were acquired in a trade with Florida during the shortened 2021 campaign for Lucas Carlsson and Lucas Wallmark. Following these likely buyouts, the only remaining player from the deal is Riley Stillman, who has two more years remaining on his three-year extension he signed after the shortened 2021 season.

With the moves, the Blackhawks will carry just over $1.2 million for the next two years on their cap for both players. Mixed in with Duncan Keith’s dead money, the Blackhawks will carry almost $7 million in dead cap in 2022-23.

GM Kyle Davidson said a rebuild was coming. However, a rebuild with this much tearing down might not have been predicted by the general public. That said, Davidson is going to put his stamp on the team and is getting rid of everyone from the Stan Bowman era.
