The Chicago White Sox suffered an 8-4 loss in Monday’s series opener four-game series opener against the Cleveland Guardians. Lance Lynn struggled through five innings of work and the Guardians scored all the runs they needed in the first frame.
Lynn Struggles
Cleveland opened the scoring in the first inning when they scratched five runs across the plate against Lance Lynn. The Sox righty needed 39 pitches to record three outs. Lynn quickly got the first two hitters out but then things came unglued.
Franmil Reyes’ RBI single up the middle and Nolan Jones’ bases-loaded broken-bat single put Cleveland up 3-0. Another bases-loaded single by Myles Straw brought home two more runs. Lynn labored through 11 hitters.
Questionable Decision
Tony La Russa elected to keep Lynn on the mound for the fifth inning despite his pitch count of 90. Lynn surrendered two more runs when Jones doubled to right center. Lynn recorded a final line of 4 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 3 K.
Jones scored the Guardians’ eighth run after a ball hit by Myles Straw caromed off of Matt Foster for a single to right.
Sox Came Close
The White Sox put three runs on the board in the third inning. Tim Anderson’s base hit put runners on the corners with one out. Anderson then swiped second base with Yoan Moncada at the plate. Next, Moncada lifted a 2-2 pitch off Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill for a three-run homer.
The South Siders plated their fourth run in the fourth inning when AJ Pollock deposited a single down the left-field line to score Jose Abreu from second.
But the offense could only muster two hits for the remainder of the game. Quantrill allowed four runs through six innings. He surrendered eight hits, a walk, and fanned 3.
