The Chicago White Sox took advantage of a late-game fielding miscue to ignite a late-inning rally Sunday afternoon. Two unearned runs crossed the plate to snap a tie score and lift the Sox to a 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. Sox pitching held the Tigers scoreless after the first inning to help the South Siders salvage a four-game split against their AL Central foes.

White Sox starter Michael Kopech labored through the first two frames but settled down nicely. Javier Baez blasted a two-run homer in the first inning for Detroit’s only runs. Baez relished the role of villain all series as he drew boos from the home crowd each time he stepped to the plate.

Kopech has struggled since a knee issue forced him to depart early from a start against Texas on June 12. He exited that game in the first inning and has pitched to a 6.15 ERA ever since. Kopech tossed 5.1 innings and allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four on Sunday. Jimmy Lambert recorded the final two outs in the sixth.

Guts

The South Siders fought back in the fifth when Yoan Moncada’s RBI single brought home Leury Garcia. It cut the deficit to one until the sixth inning when Gavin Sheets homered to right with two outs.

In the eighth, Tigers’ left fielder Robbie Grossman committed his first error since 2018 when he dropped a fly ball off the bat of Luis Robert. The fielding gaffe came with two outs and the Tigers chose to walk Jose Abreu in the aftermath. AJ Pollock pinch hit for Sheets and deposited a tiebreaking single past Jonathan Schoop into right field to score Robert.

It was a savvy move from the White Sox Hall of Fame skipper that paid off. Eloy Jimenez followed with an RBI single to plate the final run, making it a 4-2 ballgame.

Liam Hendriks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the save and secure a White Sox victory.

Notes

Tim Anderson got the day off. Leury Garcia took his place in the lineup. Tony La Russa said Anderson will get another day off before the All-Star break “because he’s very active on his legs.”

Jimenez started in left field on Sunday after sitting out Saturday as he works his way back from leg surgery.
