Roughly 30 minutes after news broke that the Chicago Blackhawks signed Max Domi and Andreas Athanasiou, the team announced another deal. Per Scott Powers of The Athletic, the Blackhawks are signing goalie Alex Stalock to a one-year, $750K deal.

Stalock last played in 2021-22 for the San Jose Sharks. Although only making one start, Stalock has a track record as a quality backup in past stops with Minnesota and his first stint with San Jose. He missed the 2021 season with a heart condition.

Stalock was originally with the Edmonton Oilers last season but was traded before making an appearance. Now, with Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen both free agents, it appears the Blackhawks have found their backup to starter Petr Mrazek, who was acquired at the draft.

Stalock’s best season was in 2019-20 with the Wild. In 38 appearances (36 starts), Stalock recorded a 20-11-4 record with a 2.67 GAA and .910 save percentage.

With little money committed to Stalock, he is a candidate to be flipped at the deadline. However, worst case scenario he is an average backup in 2022-23.
