The Chicago White Sox recently promoted coveted outfield prospect Oscar Colas from High-A Winston-Salem to Double-A Birmingham. The 23-year-old made his Barons debut Tuesday, going 1-5 with a run scored.

His promotion came as no surprise. If anything, it was overdue. Colas was on fire in June. The big lefty owned a .384/.421/.556 slash line. He had 38 hits, three home runs, 17 RBIs, and 16 runs scored in 99 at-bats. He will be the White Sox’s only representative in the Futures Game on July 16 at Dodger Stadium.

Forcing the Issue

Oscar Colas signed out of Cuba in January for roughly $2.7 million. He was a much-needed addition to a depleted farm system. During his time in High-A, Colas slashed .312/.369/.475 with seven homers, 42 RBIs, 23 walks, and 54 strikeouts in 268 plate appearances.

Colas has a tremendous upside and represents a potential White Sox option in right field, a position that has been a longtime area of need. His development and progression through the system will be something to keep a close eye on. The Double-A level features some of the best pitching talents in all of Minor League Baseball. Additionally, the ballpark in Birmingham has proven to be an unfavorable environment for hitters.

Nevertheless, it’s an exciting development to see a raw prospect like Colas show progress. It will come as no surprise if his name appears among the top 100 prospects in baseball by next season. However, I do not expect him to crack the Chicago White Sox lineup in 2023. But in due time, he will be a welcome addition to the big-league club should he reach his full potential.
