Illinois basketball will head to New York City this December. The Illini will face Texas on December 6 at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic, the program announced Thursday.
Duke and Iowa will meet in the other matchup of the doubleheader. Both games will air on ESPN and tip-off times will be announced at a later date.
2022-23 will mark Illinois’ fourth appearance in the event. The Illini last appeared in the 2020 installment, which resulted in an 82-69 loss to No. 2 Baylor. That contest took place at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN, during a COVID-altered season.
Their most recent appearance in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden resulted in a 73-59 loss to No. 7 Villanova during the 2014-15 season. Prior to that, No. 14 Illinois lost to Providence 70-51 in 2003.
After a rash of offseason departures via graduation and the transfer portal, Illinois’ roster will look much different in 2022-23. Replenished with incoming transfers and commits, this year’s Illini squad will look to record the program’s first Jimmy V Classic victory.
