Although the Chicago Cubs were rained out on Friday, there was still activity within the Cubs organization. After strong starts to the 2022 season, LHP DJ Herz and LHP Jordan Wicks were promoted from High-A South Bend to Double-A Tennessee.
DJ Herz
DJ Herz has been sensational all season long. In 17 starts with the South Bend Cubs, Herz sports a 2-2 record with a 2.26 ERA in 63.2 innings of work. In addition, Herz has struck out 99 batters compared to issuing only 37 free passes.
The lefty has electric stuff. If he continues his success that he’s experienced in South Bend with Tennessee, then Herz might be destined for Iowa to start the 2023 campaign. Herz is a former eighth-round pick from the 2019 MLB Draft.
Jordan Wicks
Jordan Wicks was the Cubs’ 2021 first-round selection out of Kansas State. While having a strong year, Wicks has put on a show in his last three starts. In his latest start, the lefty tossed 5.0 innings of one-hit, two-walk, 10-strike out ball. His gem is an excellent finale for his time in South Bend.
Wicks owns a 3.35 ERA in 16 starts for the entire season. Perhaps most impressive, Wicks has only walked 17 batters over that time. In addition, he has struck out 86 in 66.2 innings of work in South Bend.
Cubs On Tap was in attendance for Wicks’ start back on July 6. In that start, he went 5.0 innings while only giving up two hits, one walk, to accompany six strikeouts. The start also started his latest streak of dominant starts.
Both players will now meet their next test. Double-A is a hard level for pitchers and seeing their adjustments to the next challenge will be interesting. However, both pitchers are top prospects in the organization and if they look as good as they have so far at Double-A, then they’ll continue their journey to the majors with no problem.
