The Chicago White Sox didn’t have to look too far for their first-round MLB Draft choice in 2022. With the No. 26 overall pick, the Sox selected Noah Schultz from Oswego East High School.

It’s the second year in a row that the Sox have dipped into the high school waters for their first-round pick. In 2021, the South Siders selected shortstop Colson Montgomery out of Southridge High School in Huntington, Ind.

Schultz previously signed a letter of intent to attend Vanderbilt University in the fall. He will forego his commitment to sign with the White Sox. The 6-foot-9 lefty was the 49th best prospect in the 2022 MLB Draft, according to

He’s the third left-handed pitcher that the White Sox have drafted with their first pick since 2014. Carlos Rodon went to the Sox at No. 3 overall out of North Carolina State that year and Garrett Crochet went at No. 11 in 2020 out of Tennessee.

The White Sox have been fond of Tennessee-connected prospects in recent years. Along with Schultz and Crochet, they also selected right-handed hurler Carson Fulmer out of Vanderbilt in 2015.

Schultz missed most of the spring season after contracting mononucleosis early in the season. Prior to the season, many prep reports ranked Schultz at or near the top of all seniors in Illinois.

Noah Schultz appears to be a “project pick” for the Chicago White Sox. With a fastball topping out around 93 MPH, Schultz will need to increase his velocity to compete at the top level. With his tall build, scouts believe he has the physical potential to bring approach triple digits on the radar gun.
