After walking all over the National Mall, one of the best places to grab a drink or a bite to eat is the Old Ebbitt Grill. It is one of DC’s oldest establishments dating back to the mid-1800s. Many government officials have passed through the doors. While at lunch there, I was able to try one of DC Brau’s beers.

The one that was on draft was The Public Pale Ale. Its dark amber color blended in with the dark hardwood of the old bar. The head was off-white and foamy and the smell was a nutty and caramel aroma.

The Public Pale Ale checks in at a 6% ABV with a 30 IBU rating. The liquid hit the mouth with a pretty hoppy taste. It was piney with resinous hints and some juiciness. The citrus was grapefruit. Overall, it fit the mood just right with all the varnished wood around. The finish was average but smooth.

While this brew didn’t perfectly pair with the Chesapeake Bay Blue Catfish that was ordered, it was still a good beer. DC Brau’s The Public Pale Ale is sipping beer at the least. At the end of the day, it was an average pale ale and a good taste of DC. Be sure to give it a shot next time you’re in the nation’s capital.
