With the No. 47 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs selected LHP Jackson Ferris from IMG Academy.
The lefty came into the draft as the No. 19 prospect according to MLB.com. That said, getting a player with that kind of upside in the second round has to make the Cubs’ brass feel good about their first day of the draft. Ferris is the second pitcher selected by Chicago after the Cubs selected RHP Cade Horton with the No. 7 pick.
Surprisingly, Ferris slipped to the second round for the Cubs. The lefty is dominating with IMG Academy over two seasons. Over the two seasons, Ferris has a 1.03 ERA with 189 strikeouts in just 105 innings. In addition, opposing hitters are only batting .124 against the 6-foot-4 left hander.
Ferris’ repertoire consists of a mid-90’s fastball, true 12-6 curveball, and a fading changeup. According to the scouting report, Ferris’ fastball sits 92-95 with good ride. The 12-6 curve sits in the mid-70’s while his changeup is consistently in the mid-80’s. Per the reports, Ferris projects as a solid No. 2 or No. 3 starter assuming he develops properly.
