With the No. 143 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs selected RHP Brandon Birdsell out of Texas Tech University.
Birdsell is the first college player the Cubs have taken on Day Two of the MLB Draft, and the second overall after the team used the No. 7 pick to select RHP Cade Horton. The 6-foot-2 college right-hander has a strong fastball and slider that has put his name on the map.
Birdsell has been drafted two other times in his life. In 2018, he was a 39th-round pick by the Houston Astros. However, after three different colleges (Texas A&M and San Jacinto JC being the other two) Birdsell was an 11th-round selection by the Minnesota Twins last year. After not signing, he becomes the Cubs’ fifth-round pick in 2022.
Brandon Birdsell has a rough delivery according to MLB.com, but he can repeat it consistently. In addition, he is very effective. He owns a 3.04 ERA in his collegiate career along with 150 strikeouts compared to 44 walks in 127.1 innings. MLB.com calls Birdsell a top three-round talent, but injury history might sway teams away. Nonetheless, the Cubs may have a plan for Birdsell to develop with help of their state-of-the-art Lab in the future.
