With the No. 113 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs selected RHP/SS Nazier Mule out of Passaic County Technical Institute.

Mule was listed as both a pitcher and shortstop coming out of the draft this year. However, the MLB Draft Tracker lists the 17-year-old as a pitcher. That said, its easy to understand why the Cubs want Mule as a pitcher. In 79.2 innings over two seasons, the right-hander only allowed 23 earned runs while striking out 134 batters and walking 29.

Per MLB.com, Mule put his position skills at shortstop on the back burner after massive strides as a pitcher. At a number of showcases, the 6-foot-3 high schooler touched triple digits with his fastball, but routinely sits around 93-96 mph. When Mule elevates his speed, he tends to lose control. That said, raw arm talent is hard to come by at any level, let alone from a high school player. He is now the second high school player the Cubs have selected on Day Two of the MLB Draft.

An interesting note attached to Mule is his commitment to Miami for college baseball. There is belief that he would like to tap into his raw power at the plate and become a true two-way threat. However, with arm talent like his, its easy to see why teams want him as a pitcher. In the Cubs’ case, signing him is going to require serious dollars to sway his commitment.

Just imagine, with the resources the Cubs have for pitchers and the raw talent that Mule possesses, this could be a match made in heaven. Mule is only 17 years old, so he is a long way from the MLB. That said, he will be a player to watch in the Cubs’ pipeline for years to come, assuming he signs.
