The rankings for Madden 23 are released one day at a time and they released the edge rushers on Tuesday. Chicago Bears linebacker, Roquan Smith, is on that list and pretty far down it. Overall, in terms of right outside linebackers, or ROLB, he is ranked third. But what score does he warrant and is that a fair assessment?
Roquan Smith Madden Ranking
When looking at edge rushers as a whole, Madden includes linebackers in all three areas: middle, left, and right. But it also includes defensive ends on both left and right sides. It makes sense overall considering edge rusher is a unique term to classify the position and since multiple recent players strictly focus on that aspect of the game, this list warrants its own focus.

Roquan Smith Overall
Roquan Smith is 16th on the aforementioned list with an 89 overall rating in Madden. It seems like an 89 rating is a big knock on him though considering how much he plays and everything he does on the defensive side of the ball. But this is strictly of pass rushers and his career numbers don’t stack up to some of the other players on this list.
In four years and 61 games, Smith has 14 sacks and 43 tackles for loss. He has the ability to rush the passer and that’s not debatable. But he is definitely a focal point for opposing offenses.
They must know where he is at all times and since he has the ability to move both forward and backward, the unknown aspect of Roquan Smith’s game is only one piece of his capability.
Perhaps Madden took into consideration the fact that Smith plays a more centered position than a pure edge rusher. If that is the case, then his omission from the top 10 is understandable. But his overall rating still has the feeling of disrespect.
ROLB Madden Rankings
It’s no surprise to see who sits atop this specific list. Khalil Mack is an absolute wrecking ball as we Chicago Bears fans know. Chandler Jones had five sacks in week one alone last year and ended the season with 10.5 sacks in only 15 games.
Smith sits in the third spot ahead of Micah Parsons, Za’Darius Smith, and Josh Allen. This spot fits Roquan Smith well. Some people believe he is the best linebacker in the NFL and cannot believe that he hasn’t been selected to a Pro Bowl.
But Smith continues to pursue greatness and hopes to remain a Chicago Bears linebacker for the rest of his career. If Madden isn’t giving players like Mack and Jones ratings higher than 92, then it makes sense to see Roquan Smith sport an 89 rating.
Although, his 348 solo tackles and five interceptions should be enough to break through into the 90’s level of skill. But there is always next year and Roquan Smith is bound for a great 2022 season with Matt Eberflus’ guidance.
