The Chicago Cubs signed 2022 first-round draft pick Cade Horton, the team announced Saturday.
Horton’s contract is below slot value for a seventh-overall selection, which is allotted at $5.71 million. There is also a $4.45 million signing bonus, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com.
Horton posted a 4.86 ERA in 14 appearances (11 starts) in 53.2 innings in the regular season for Oklahoma. His draft sock rose during the postseason, when he had a 2.61 ERA in five starts.
Horton is among eight of the Cubs’ top 10 picks from this year’s draft to sign with the team. The Cubs have also signed shortstop Christopher Paciolla (third round), and right-handed pitchers Brandon Birdsell (fifth), Will Frisch (sixth), Nick Hull (seventh), Mason McGwire (eighth), Connor Noland (ninth), and Brody McCullough (10th).
Of the Cubs’ first 10 picks, high schoolers Jackson Ferris (second) and Nazier Mule (fourth) remain unsigned. Mule, who is committed to play at Miami, announced Friday he will sign with Chicago.
The Chicago Cubs will be able to use the savings from the Cade Horton deal to push to sign Ferris, who is committed to Ole Miss.
