Guess who’s back causing headlines?! If you guessed LaVar Ball, you were right. The father of the Ball brothers recently told David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 that Chicago Bulls’ point guard Lonzo Ball is coming along and will be ready to go for the start of the NBA season.
LaVar made headlines in Chicago media before NBA free agency started. He said he believed that Zach LaVine would go to the Los Angeles Lakers and not re-sign with the Chicago Bulls. Well, he was wrong. LaVine returned to the Bulls on a max contract on the second day of NBA free agency.
But this time around, his comment actually pertains to his son. LaVar believes that Lonzo will be ready for the start of the 2022-23 NBA season despite concerns about his knee.
Lonzo has been out since January and he went under the knife to repair a meniscus tear. He was also dealing with a deep bone bruise. There were whispers about a potential return before the playoffs began, but that didn’t happen. Reports indicated that any time the Bulls started ramping up Lonzo’s workload, his knee would give him trouble and they’d have to rest him to recover.
Continuity has been the keyword for the Bulls’ front office. They want to run back their roster in the 2022-23 season to see what they can do while healthy. Lonzo Ball is a key spoke in that wheel that makes the Bulls roll. While he was healthy last year, Chicago ranked in the top 10 in offensive and defensive efficiency. They also held first place in the Eastern Conference for an extended period of time while Lonzo was available.
Hopefully, LaVar Ball isn’t blowing smoke for a headline and Lonzo will actually be ready by the time training camp and the preseason come around. But you know, LaVar is going to LaVar. That’s because he’s a “Big Baller.”
