Cubs Trade Rumors: ‘Almost Everyone’ Wants Ian Happ

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, several teams are interested in Ian Happ, and the All-Star could be on the move very soon.

With one week left until the MLB trade deadline, it’s no surprise that the trade rumor mill is in full effect, especially with the Chicago Cubs. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, All-Star outfielder Ian Happ is a prime target among many teams and could be headed out of the Windy City soon:

“Two things have become clear in the past week as trade talks picked up: Almost everyone wants Happ, and the Cubs are likely to trade him, according to sources.”

Jeff Passan, ESPN

Heading into the 2022 season, there was concern about whether Happ could break away from the profile that he was a slow starter and couldn’t stay consistent. The switch-hitter has responded to those doubts by putting up consistent numbers throughout the first half and making his first All-Star team. In 94 games this season, he is slashing .282/.367/.445 with nine home runs, 24 doubles, and 44 RBIs.

Happ’s consistent play this season has easily made him a major trade target among several teams, according to Passan, and maybe it’s perfect timing. With another year of team control remaining on Happ’s contract, the Cubs could use that to their advantage when it comes to the trade market. Already proving that he can be consistent and have quality at-bats, Happ could entice teams to part with quality prospects for his services.

Ian Happ’s Future Outlook

Is there still a chance the Chicago Cubs’ organization decides to keep Ian Happ and work out an extension either this offseason or next? Possibly, but let’s be honest. What’s the likelihood of that happening based on the Cubs’ overall performance this year? And are the North Siders going to make a run for the playoffs within the next two years? There’s a chance, but probably not.

If Passan is correct with his sources, which he has proven to be time and time again, then right now could be the perfect time for the Cubs to deal Happ.

Obviously, outfielder Juan Soto has been the talk of the trade deadline for the past few days, but only one team is going to get him (if the Washington Nationals decide to trade him). If a contender is looking for a player that puts up consistent at-bats, switch-hits, and can play multiple outfield spots, Happ could be a nice ‘Option B’ to Soto. If the offer is too good to refuse, and I’m in the Cubs’ front office, I’m listening.
