The MLB Trade Deadline is quickly approaching. With that in mind, the Cubs are busy fielding calls on their pair of All-Stars Willson Contreras and Ian Happ. Amid the #ExtendWilly movement, reports have surfaced via Jesse Rogers of ESPN that the Cubs and Contreras have not talked about an extension since 2017.

Consistent with players such as Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Anthony Rizzo, it’s uncertain if the Cubs had intentions of extending Willson Contreras. That said, the fact that the discussion hasn’t been had since 2017 certainly raises eyebrows amid the Cubs’ fan base.

Impending Deadline

With extension talks appearing non-existent, Contreras will be one of the hottest names on the market come August 2. There are already a number of rumors, including with the New York Mets, that the Cubs are talking to teams about their star catcher. He should fetch a really good package at the deadline that helps the Cubs in the future.

That said, with the loss of a beloved player comes sadness amongst fans. Over at Cubs On Tap, we vented about our disdain for watching our favorite players get traded because the team isn’t “ready to compete.” Even the players themselves don’t want to leave such a historic franchise.

Now that the term “extension” will not be in the Cubs’ vocabulary with Wilson Contreras and Ian Happ, fans have to wait and see what the return is for two of their favorite stars. Although it likely helps the Cubs in the future, the pain will be very much visible in the present.
