Max Domi Says Luke Richardson Hire Drew Him to Blackhawks

The driving force behind Domi’s desire to join the rebuilding squad should offer hope for the future behind the Blackhawks’ bench.

As the Chicago Blackhawks embark on their full-scale rebuild, there are several new faces in the building at 1901 W Madison St. One of them is Luke Richardson, whom the Blackhawks hired as head coach on June 27. His presence is already making an impact, as Hawks’ free-agent signee Max Domi emphasized during his introductory remarks.

“As soon as [the Blackhawks] hired Luke Richardson as their head coach, I got on the phone with my agent and told him, ‘I want to go to Chicago,'” Domi told reporters Thursday.

The Blackhawks brought Domi in as one of their first moves when the 2022 NHL free-agent frenzy began. Widely viewed as an eventual trade chip due to his one-year contract, Domi may not be in Chicago very long.

But he will at least begin the season with the Blackhawks, a team that will likely finish at the bottom of the standings when the 2022-23 campaign is said and done.

Max Domi could have elected to seek out a spot on a contending team. The 27-year-old winger is fresh off a stint with the Carolina Hurricanes that resulted in a second-round exit from the playoffs. Prior to that, he endured a first-round exit from the 2020 bubble with the Montreal Canadiens.

Instead, Domi chose to reunite with a familiar face in Luke Richardson, who served as a Canadiens assistant coach while the rugged winger played north of the border.

Yes, the Chicago Blackhawks will be bad — like really bad — in 2022-23. But the driving force behind Domi’s desire to join the rebuilding squad should offer hope for the future behind the Hawks’ bench.
