Coby White left his exit meeting with the Chicago Bulls in April with directives to improve both his ball handling and strength ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season.
And from the look of things, White has taken that mission to heart.
Yet, his future with the team appears uncertain at best. According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bulls have been shopping White for the last year and have no intention of extending him anytime soon.
“Instead,” Cowley wrote, “the Bulls seem poised to keep White for depth purposes, revisit his trade value at the deadline if the backcourt is healthy, and if he is a Bull come next summer, simply let the market set a price on him and decide if the restricted free agent would be worth matching.”
Such is the harsh reality for the combo guard who, just last season, posted career-highs in both field-goal percentage (43.3) and three-point percentage (38.5). But, inconsistency has been the bane of the former seventh-overall pick’s existence.
Take last season’s first-round playoff series loss to the Bucks for example. White was 5-for-12 from the field in the opener, but missed 25 of his next 35 shots — 28 of which he launched without a defender within four feet of him.
The 22-year-old seemed destined to be squeezed out of the rotation as a result. That is until Zach LaVine (COVID-19) and Alex Caruso (concussion) were forced out of the lineup.
Now — with Billy Donovan having as many guards to choose from as there are days in the week — White’s future is riding on his ability to finally grab consistency by the horns more than ever.
