The Chicago Cubs will play their first series after the trade deadline when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals for a three-game set starting Tuesday.

The Cubs’ (41-60) winning streak ended at six games in San Francisco against the Giants last Thursday. Chicago dropped three of four against the Giants, winning the second game of the four-game set. Cubs’ first baseman P.J. Higgins remained in Sunday’s 4-0 loss to the Giants after he slammed his right hip into a photo well in foul territory. He consulted with a team trainer but stayed in the game. Cubs manager David Ross said the team’s medical staff will reexamine Higgins before the series in St. Louis.

The Cardinals (54-48) have won three of their past four after claiming a three-game set at the Washington Nationals. St. Louis is one game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL’s third wild-card spot. The Cardinals went 4-4 on their three-city, eight-game road trip to start the second half of the season.
