The Chicago Cubs have not provided an official update yet, but according to reports, second baseman Nick Madrigal is with the team in St. Louis as they prepare to take on the Cardinals for a three-game set.
Madrigal went on the injured list for the second time on June 15 due to a groin strain. He previously missed time in May due to back tightness.
The 25-year-old struggled out of the gates in 2022. In 31 games, he slashed .222/.263/.250 with no home runs and two RBIs. Generally known for his high contact rate and line drive spray ability, Madrigal has a career-high 14.8 percent strikeout rate at the major league level this year. That’s still well better than league average. However, he never struck out more than 11.6 percent.
After a brief rehab stint, Madrigal had a setback and restarted another rehab stint on July 22 with Triple-A Iowa. Since then, he hit 9-25 with a .360 BA and .407 OBP in seven games. One would assume another trade or roster move is on the horizon for the Cubs as the 5:00 PM CDT deadline approaches.
Whether he’s activated today or tomorrow, Nick Madrigal should see a lot of run post-deadline as the Chicago Cubs hope to get some production out of him after trading for him at last year’s deadline. Also, Madrigal’s bobblehead day at Wrigley Field is coming up on August 6. It would be weird if he couldn’t play for that game.
