Tuesday was a mixed bag for the Chicago White Sox. The club failed to make any additions on trade deadline day despite a flurry of activity across MLB. But they did succeed on the field with a 9-2 dismantling of the Kansas City Royals. While the offense grabbed headlines, the White Sox’s lone trade deadline addition, lefty reliever Jake Diekman, made his team debut on the South Side.

The White Sox acquired Diekman in a trade that sent catcher Reese McGuire and a player to be named later or cash considerations to the Boston Red Sox. Upon changing the color of his Sox, Diekman delivered a spotless inning in relief.

The 35-year-old southpaw relieved starter Lucas Giolito in the sixth inning. Diekman struck out the first two Royals batters he faced, using sweeping sliders to wipe out Nick Pratto and Michael A. Taylor. He then induced a weak groundout off the bat of Kyle Isbel for the final out of the frame.

Rick Hahn’s inactivity at the deadline leaves the Sox with plenty of question marks heading into the home stretch of the season. However, he did address one area of need by acquiring Jake Diekman. With Aaron Bummer eyeing a September return, Diekman will serve as the top left-handed option out of the Chicago White Sox bullpen for the foreseeable future.
