The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals will play a split doubleheader Thursday after Wednesday’s contest was rained out. Prior to Game 1, the Cubs announced a few roster moves. LHP Matt Dermody will serve as the 27th man and the club will add LHP Sean Newcomb to start Game 2.

Matt Dermody gets the call from Triple-A Iowa, where he has a 6-3 record and a 3.74 ERA this season. The southpaw also has a 1.30 WHIP and 70 strikeouts in 79.1 innings across 20 games (13 starts). Dermody has appeared in just one MLB game for the Cubs, and that outing occurred during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.

With the Cubs’ bullpen being depleted thanks to the trade deadline, Dermody will certainly be utilized during the doubleheader. Although the team added RHP Kervin Castro off waivers from the San Francisco Giants, there is plenty of innings to replace after the departures of Mychal Givens, Scott Effross, Chris Martin, and David Robertson.

As for Newcomb, the lefty returns to the Cubs after being DFA’d two months ago. After accepting an assignment to Triple-A Iowa, the former Atlanta Brave has been quite solid. In 12 appearances (one start) in Des Moines, Newcomb carries a 3.38 ERA across 24.0 innings pitched. In addition, the lefty has struck out 31 batters while walking 18. The walks are high, but he hasn’t allowed them to cost him too much.

As indicated by Sahadev Sharma, there will be a corresponding move announced ahead of the second game on Thursday. We will update this article when that move is announced. Newcomb was pegged the starter after Justin Steele’s originally scheduled Wednesday start was pushed back to Friday.
