The Chicago Fire will visit first-year side Charlotte FC for the first time in franchise history Saturday at Bank of America Stadium.
The Fire (6-5-11) are on a four-match unbeaten run (3-0-1) after their win streak ended at three matches with a 0-0 draw with Atlanta United last Saturday at home. It will be the Fire’s first match after 18-year-old goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina signed a six-year, $15 million contract with The Premier League’s Chelsea FC. Slonina will finish out the 2022 season before joining the reigning world champions Jan. 1, 2023.
Chicago won its last road match, 3-1 at Vancouver. The Fire haven’t won consecutive road matches since October 2013, when they were victorious at D.C. United and FC Dallas.
Charlotte (9-2-12) captured its eighth home win in 11 attempts this season with a 3-0 victory against DC United. Karol Swiderski scored his team-leading sixth goal, and Charlotte’s two other goals came off his rebounds. Kristijan Kahlina made one save for his sixth shutout, including his fifth at home.
With the win, Charlotte moved above FC Cincinnati into the seventh and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Fire are two points behind Charlotte. Inter Miami and Cincinnati are tied with Charlotte on points, but are behind the first-year side based on the tiebreaker of matches won.
