The Chicago Bears are really packing the house with names that are new to the organization but familiar to their new leaders. Matt Eberflus worked with Alan Williams in Indianapolis and could be bringing him to the Bears as the new defensive coordinator, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Williams has been operating in defensive secondaries in the NFL since 2001 and brings a plethora of coaching experience.

Alan Williams' Coaching Experience

Williams began his NFL coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001. He then served as the defensive backs coach for the Colts from 2002 to 2011. His first stint in Indianapolis came to a close when he joined the Minnesota Vikings as defensive coordinator.

During his time with the Vikings, Alan Williams' defense ranked near the bottom in only two years. After that, he joined the Detroit Lions through the 2017 season as their defensive backs coach. When his time in Detroit was through, Williams went back to the Colts as the defensive backs coach.

Having spent the last several seasons with current Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus, this hire makes a ton of sense. The Colts' defense ranked well in terms of takeaways under Eberflus and Frank Reich. Naturally, Williams fits with a Bears' defense that already has a formidable pass-rush. That area of strength would allow Williams to focus on creating opportunities in the secondary.

The Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator position is an attractive job for Alan Williams. But it could be more than that. This is his best opportunity at redemption after the underwhelming results in Minnesota.
