The Bears are signing WR/KR/PR Damiere Byrd to a one-year deal. Contract details have not yet been disclosed.
Byrd came into the league in as an undrafted free agent in 2015, signing with the Carolina Panthers. He played in Carolina from 2015 to 2018, and has made stops in Arizona and New England in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
After limited production in Carolina, Byrd started to break out in Arizona in 2019 with 32 catches for 359 yards and one touchdown. In 2020, he became Cam Newton's primary target in New England as he caught 47 of his 77 targets for 604 yards and one touchdown.
In 2020, his most productive games resulted in 132 (HOU), 80 (KC), 72 (SEA), and 65 (NYJ) yards receiving. Byrd has returned 14 punts in his career for an average of 8.1 yards. He has returned 14 kicks in his career for an average of 25.2 yards and one score.
Byrd played his college ball at South Carolina, and is a noticeable athlete on the field.
Between Byrd, Darnell Mooney, Dazz Newsome, and Marquise Goodwin, the Bears now roster one of the fastest receiving corps in the NFL. They also have an array of options at both the punt return and kick return spots.
