After asking for permission to interview Ian Cunningham this past week, the Chicago Bears have prevented him from returning to Philadelphia. The former director of player personnel for the Eagles is joining the Bears as Ryan Poles' assistant GM.
Cunningham has 14 years of NFL front office experience. After a number of seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, he made his way to the City of Brotherly Love. Cunningham has continued his ascent through the front office ranks and now gets his first look as an assistant general manager. According to reports, Cunningham and Poles have a relationship, so this hire makes a lot of sense for the first-year GM.
The encouraging part of this hire is the amount of praise it is receiving. Per one of Jon Greenberg's NFL contacts, he said he would hire Cunningham despite never working with him. That shows the strength of his reputation around the league.
Ian Cunningham also brings a first to the Bears' front office. According to Jarrett Payton, Cunningham will be the first assistant GM in team history. It's a fun fact that is quite surprising. However, it's encouraging because Poles is surrounding himself with quality football minds.
There are still many hires to be made for the Bears. But this is another encouraging front office addition for Chicago.
