The Chicago Bears carousel of head coaching candidates can finally stop. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Bears have hired Matt Eberflus as their new head coach.
The Chicago Bears' New Ryan and Matt
The Bears finally have their foundational pieces set for the foreseeable future. The new Ryan (Poles) and Matt (Eberflus) will get to work and flesh out the rest of their staff. Eberflus is a first-time head coach with a solid defensive background to help build the Chicago Bears back to greatness.
Matt Eberflus as the Colts' DC
Eberflus spent the last four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator under head coach Frank Reich. The Colts' defense ranked in the top 10 in takeaways, points allowed, yards per game, and yards per carry.
Moments before this hire was announced, Dan Quinn removed himself from the coaching search. He opted to return to the Dallas Cowboys and chase a championship there.
This could be coincidental, but it also could have played a part in the Chicago's decision. They were rumored to be interested in Quinn, and also have a history of almost hiring him in the past.
Whatever the case is behind the scenes, the Chicago Bears have a new head coach to go along with their new general manager. Hiring Matt Eberflus is the beginning of a new era in Bears history, one in which they can return to their defensive foundation that defines Chicago Bears football.
