The Chicago Bears are trying to fill in their depth chart as training camp progresses. They are in major need of more linebackers as the first preseason game approaches. They brought in USFL player DeMarquis Gates to do just that. The football leagues outside of the NFL have started to see guys break through on to NFL rosters. Gates did well enough to earn a spot at Bears camp.

Gates is coming off being a member of the USFL champions in 2022. During the campaign, Gates was regarded as the best linebacker in the league. He contributed 62 total tackles, while adding 6.5 sacks, and one interception for the Birmingham Stallions. His play earned himself Defensive Player of the Week twice.

In 2018, Gates went undrafted out of Ole Miss. The Cleveland Browns added him to their camp roster, but he did not make the team. Throughout his career, he has also had opportunities with the Washington Commanders and the Minnesota Vikings, but he has yet to see any action.

The rest of Gates' career has involved bouncing around the USFL, CFL, XFL, and AAF. Hopefully with the help of the Bears defensive minded coaching staff, this will be Gates’ break to get into the NFL.
