Today, Bears fans woke up to the tragic news of former Bear, Ryan Wetnight’s passing.
Wetnight played seven of his eight NFL seasons in Chicago and spent one year in Green Bay. He played during a time when tight ends weren’t featured pass-catchers in every offense, so they were required to do a lot more dirty work. He didn’t back down on the field and he approached his battle with cancer with the same attitude. After his football playing days were over, he started coaching. It was his playersand community that gave him strength to battle stomach cancer so admirably.
“It’s not fun, obviously, but I’m motivated because of these guys,” the 48-year-old coach said of his players. “With all my cancer issues and struggles right now, it’s been very difficult. To have the team behind you -- and the school and community -- is very motivating for me.”
The Bears family lost a precious member today, and our sincerest condolences go out to the Wetnight family.
