Head Coach Matt Nagy spoke to the media ahead of the team's practice on Saturday. Nagy provided an update on the team's health and it turned out to be less than ideal. The list of ailments plaguing the team has expanded.

Injury Updates for Saturday

Four new players were held out of Saturday's practice:

  • J.P Holtz (quad)
  • Lachavious Simmons (concussion)
  • Thomas Ives (glute)
  • Roquan Smith (groin)

In regards to Smith's injury, the head coach provided some thoughts. Even though it failed to provide an ounce of clarity.

Meanwhile, a handful of key veteran players got the day off as part of "load management", according to Nagy. Those players were:

  • Jimmy Graham
  • Akiem Hicks
  • Danny Trevathan
  • Khalil Mack

However, Nagy did provide a positive update and that a handful of players returned to the field. Even though the practice time was limited for those players.

Eddie Jackson Update

Additionally, the fourth-year head coach provided an update on starting free safety Eddie Jackson. Jackson, who landed on the non-football injury list at the start of camp, remains out. However, Nagy had the following to say about Jackson's injury status:

Final Tally

Surprisingly, the Bears are a banged up unit this early into training camp. As a result, their rash of ailments forces third-string players into starting roles and that doesn't bode well, especially with their first preseason game just one week away.

No Need to Panic, But It's Ok to be Concerned

In conclusion, while there aren't any injuries causing significant concern there is reason to worry as some players haven't practiced at all yet. On the other hand, the Bears do have time on their side as there are five weeks until their first regular season game. Ideally, you'd like to see these players get reps during camp leading up to Week One. It'll be an interesting development to keep an eye on as training goes on and as preseason gets underway.
