Beer Review: Elysian - Space Dust IPA

Get ready for a rush of hops if you're trying out Elysian's Space Dust IPA.
Elysian Space Dust IPA

My wife went grocery shopping today and on her way out I made a bold request. “Pick me up some beer… the craziest looking label you see,” I said.

Boy, did she deliver!

The Elysian Space Dust IPA is not a new beer, and it's certainly not an underground one either as it has over 320,000 ratings on UNTAPPD with an average rating of 3.86 out of 5. It is a beer that is pretty widely available, but one I had never personally tried. It is brewed and bottled by Elysian Brewing Company in Seattle, WA.

I love this label! It includes a celestial scene with a painted look almost in the vein of Van Gough’s Starry Night. An animated Hop breathes (or pukes?) a stream of hop-infused sparkles, which I assume is meant to be the “Space Dust”.

It’s a mildly strong IPA at 8.2% ABV with an IBU rating of 62. Chinook hops are the feature of this beer with Citra and Amarillo hops added late in the process to finish.

The pour is deep gold/burnt orange in color and nearly 100% opaque with minimum head.

The nose is very mild and unobtrusive, although the Citra and Amarillo hops are definitely present.

This is not a beer for the faint of heart or the casual IPA fan. The pallet comes in with a spicy bite but quickly drys out and the bitter Chinook hops come blasting through with their unique flavor. The Amarillo is also present. This is definitely not a juicy OR piney IPA.

The finish is where this beer separates itself from the casual IPA and makes it more targeted for enthusiasts. The strong bitterness of the Chinook hits you smack dab in the jowls about seven seconds after the finish and stays with you for quite a while. Many people will want a glass of water to cleanse the pallet once in a while.

IPA’s are my favorite beer style. I really liked this beer and would definitely recommend trying it. Because I personally enjoy more pine to my IPA’s, the length and intensity of the aftertaste was a slight turnoff for me.

Happy Drinking!
