This is a big day for me. In all honesty, I have not given stouts or porters the attention I probably should. I wanted to try something different and this can and name caught my attention for some reason. I see that it's an imperial stout at a whopping 12% ABV. I haven't had a stout in a long time so if I'm going to get one I might as well go big, right?
Well there it is. It has a jet black color that even my wife took notice of. "What the hell is that?" she exclaimed. It also has a nice light brown inch of head on it when poured properly. Describing the taste is something I will have to improve upon moving forward because I have very little experience with the style. Immediately, it felt very boozy with that 12% ABV coming through. But it was quickly followed up with a sweet, roasted coffee, smokey, chocolate taste. I can still feel the booziness in the aftertaste, but it all still gets masked well enough by the complexity of the flavors. This is a wonderful beer that also does not have to be consumed cold or quickly. I actually took 80 minutes to finish one of these and I enjoyed the last drink just as much as the first.
This beer on its own has changed my whole opinion on the style. I have had a few in the past and enjoyed them for the most part, but this one was so fantastic that it has me looking forward to trying out plenty of others in the near future. Being that the colder months are closing in, I don't think I could have come to this realization at a better time.
