The Chicago Blackhawks may not be producing much offense as of late, but their top prospect is. Rockford IceHogs forward Lukas Reichel earned AHL Player of the Week honors after a six-point performance in just two games.
When the IceHogs returned to action from the holiday break, Reichel continued to lead the way.
The Blackhawks' 2020 first-round pick posted four points (two goals, two assists) in Rockford's 8-0 beatdown of the Chicago Wolves on Jan. 7.
The following night, Reichel padded the stat sheet with a goal and an assist in the IceHogs' 6-2 win over the Milwaukee Admirals.
Lukas Reichel leads Rockford in scoring with 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) in 20 games this season.
When Will The Blackhawks Recall Reichel?
It's no secret the Blackhawks need some help in the scoring department. Chicago currently ranks 28th in goals-for among all NHL teams. Reichel could certainly help the team improve in that category, but the Blackhawks won't pull the trigger just yet.
Over the AHL's holiday break, the 19-year-old forward contracted COVID-19. Blackhawks' interim head coach said the team wants Reichel to get back into the swing of things at Rockford before a potential call-up.
Despite the small sample size, his award-winning performance since returning to action is a good indicator he's on the right track. It shouldn't be too much longer until he's taking the ice at the United Center.
