According to Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic, the Chicago Bulls have extended a qualifying offer of $4.7 million to Denzel Valentine for the 2020-21 season.

The 14th overall pick of the 2016 draft has not lived up to expectations during his time in Chicago. For his career, he has averaged 7.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. Valentine has dealt with injury issues throughout most of his professional career. He appeared in just 36 games last year after missing the entire 2018-19 season due to his most significant injury setback that required reconstructive ankle surgery.

Hopefully with extended time off due to the COVID-19 stoppage and the offseason, Valentine will be the healthiest he has been in years. Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley probably see that a clean bill of health and having a competent coach will allow him to have a chance at a legitimate "prove-it" year before the Bulls officially default on the 2016 first-rounder. Valentine has shown flashes of his ability but has never sustained a high level of play during the regular season. Hopefully he can surprise most of his doubters and be an in-house rotational piece with the current core.
