Former Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng is in the news again. This time, it's because he earned an award from Her Majesty, the Queen of England. Deng was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE). The award is for contributing to the arts and sciences in addition to working with charitable/welfare organizations for civil service.

Deng is well-known for his charity work in South Sudan, where he uses basketball to connect with the youth via his Luol Deng Foundation.

Here is what Deng had to say about receiving the OBE award.

"Yesterday, I was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for my services to the sport of basketball, an honor and experience of a lifetime. What made it so profound for me was not about validation or a title. It was about the transcendent power of sport, which has been my primary tool for giving back to the places that have played a role in my life," Deng wrote in an Instagram caption.

"South Sudan is who I am, but I’m eternally grateful to England for granting my family asylum. South London helped raised me, and where I forged my lifelong relationship with the sport that changed my life forever. I am where I am because of Brixton basketball, and am proud of contributions I’ve been blessed to make to grassroots sport through my foundation (DengTop50, Deng Academy).

"This felt like a bookend to representing England at the 2012 London Olympics and seeing my face on the £5 note in Brixton. And inevitably, this moment is most meaningful because I was able to share it with my mother, who I aspire to make proud in everything I do," Deng continued.

"Thank you to the Queen for the honor, to Prince William for awarding me the medal, and a special thank you to Mike Vear and Pete Simmons @peteman82 for working behind the scenes to amplify the work and journey."

Luol Deng's charitable efforts are certainly praiseworthy, and the Queen of England agrees. The Chicago Bulls and their fans should be proud.
