After a two-year sabbatical, the greatest south side tradition is set to make its triumphant return on March 13.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the best interest of the public's health at stake, the city of Chicago canceled the South Side Irish Parade in both 2020 and 2021.

That said, it is a tradition unlike any other. Thousands of citizens from the South Side of Chicago and surrounding south suburban neighborhoods flock to the streets of Beverly to take in the sights and sounds of St. Patrick’s Day.

Starting on 103rd St. and Western Ave., people “parade” all the way to 115th St. Onlookers are treated to anything from floats of all sizes from local businesses, to high school bands playing Irish classics.

Not to be outdone by the parade itself, St. Patrick’s Day is the biggest #CrackUm holiday of the year. You can get your fix during the parade at one of the many Irish pubs located along Western Ave.

If you’re feeling nostalgic, the option of getting a healthy buzz in any neighborhood backyard party awaits you, just like the good old days. Coolers full of beer and the necessary ingredients for a car bomb are at your fingertips. When you get hungry (you will), someone’s mother made her ancestral corn beef and cabbage recipe and it will be the best thing you have ever eaten. The parade, and the holiday itself, are something special on Chicago's South Side.
