After the announcement of Trent Frazier returning for a fifth year and Adam Miller entering the transfer portal, Illini basketball fans have been through quite the whirlwind since the 2020-21 season ended.
Now, in a nugget of good news, Illinois landed one of the best shooting recruits for the 2021 class, Brandin Podziemski.
Podziemski, a four-star recruit, chose Illinois over Kentucky, Miami (FL), Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest. He attended St. John's Northwestern Academies, where he won Wisconsin Mr. Basketball honors for the 2020-21 season. Podziemski brings a sharp shooting touch to Champaign, as evidenced by his 35 PPG average this season.
With the departure of Ayo Dosunmu, Illinois basketball has big shoes to fill. Kofi Cockburn has not found himself in ESPN’s top 100 mock draft picks, so it will be interesting to see if he tests the waters and hires an agent for the draft. Giorgi Bezhanishvili is also entering the draft but could still return next season as well.
Either way, this is a much-needed addition to a program that has plenty up in the air for the upcoming season.
